The Science

Regular outdoor exercise & physical fitness :

  • Strengthens your immune system and reduces the risk of both catching COVID, and the risk of severe outcome from COVID infection (Public Health England – COVID Insight Review July 2020)
  • Reduces the risk of lifestyle-related diseases – the underlying epidemic in the UK
  • Contributes to positive mental health and social engagement

The Numbers

Running is the most popular sport in the UK, enjoyed by 7.5 million adults each week, including 25,000 in the Bath area

Running is also the most accessible participation sport, requiring minimal equipment or infrastructure.

Running was one of the only sports to see a significant increase in participation during the first national lockdown, whilst restrictions on gyms, leisure centres and team sports caused general activity levels to plummet across the UK, with 30 per cent of the adult population being ‘inactive’ between March and May, and almost 12 million adults doing almost no exercise
